Three of these celebrations are actually emotional.
‘Happy birthday, mami’
Back in 2011, after scoring a penalty against Racing Santander, Leo Messi lifted his Barcelona shirt to reveal a congratulatory message to his mother, who was celebrating her birthday. Unfortunately, the player was later fined by the competition committee for lifting his shirt during the celebration.
Fragile X syndrome
After netting a goal in Barca’s legendary 6-2 away win against Real Madrid, Leo lifted his Blaugrana jersey to reveal a shirt reading ‘Sindrome X Fragil’, or Fragile X syndrome in English. It is a genetic problem characterized by mild-to-moderate intellectual disability.
Leo and his family support an organization helping kids with this disorder. During one of the meetings with children suffering from the syndrome, the Argentine had promised to dedicate a goal to them and he did it in El Clasico.
Read the name
Messi came in clutch in the away Clasico from back in 2017. After making the score 3-2 in Barca’s favour with a few minutes before the final whistle, the captain took off his jersey, turned it so the Real Madrid fans could read the name on the back, and just stood there, with the Santiago Bernabeu crowd going silent. Definitely one of the most iconic goal celebration of Leo’s career.
Maradona tribute
As a homage to the late Diego Maradona, during the Osasuna game, Messi wore a no.10 Newell’s Old Boys jersey similar to what Maradona wore back in his days at the club. After getting his goal, Leo removed the Blaugrana kit to reveal the classic red and black shirt with the iconic no.10 on the back.
