Chelsea are reportedly contemplating an approach for La Liga giants, Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez during the next summer transfer window
Uruguay international defender was on the West London club’s radar earlier in 2020, only for the Premier League giants to decide that Atletico’s asking price was too high and instead managed to lure Thiago Silva on a free transfer.
However, according to Fabrizio Romano’s Here We Go podcast, the Blues will renew their interest at the end of the current campaign as Frank Lampard wants to add another top-class defender to his squad.
The 25-year-old, who is currently valued at £100m, has only made five starts in all competitions this campaign.
At a time when just two-and-a-half years stay on the defenders contract, Atletico may have to reassess their stance regarding the Uruguay international.
Chelsea are also believed to be hopeful of handing a contract extension to veteran centre-back, Thiago Silva who has impressed at Stamford Bridge since his arrival in the summer.
Meanwhile, Chelsea will reportedly hold discussions with the agent of Bayern Munich versatile defender David Alaba when the January transfer will be re-opened.
Alaba has still not signed a new contract at the Allianz Arena, and as it stands, the Austria international will be free tot talk with foreign club in January.
A number of teams, including Chelsea’s Premier League rivals, Liverpool and Serie A champions Juventus have been credited with an interest in the 28-year-old defender, who remains a key figure for the European champions.
However, according to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Alaba’s agent Pini Zahavi will hold talks with Chelsea in January about a possible switch to the West London club.
