The defender grew up in a less-than-privileged family and he always tried to chip in.
Eric Bailly is a fan favourite at Manchester United today but he wasn’t always so fortunate in life.
The centre-back had a tough childhood, hailing from a less-than privileged family in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast (click here to read more about Bailly’s hometown).
Recalling how he often sold old phones and cigarettes to support his family’s income, Eric told The Players’ Tribune in 2019: “I spent 18 months at Villarreal, and suddenly I was playing for Manchester United.
“In about five years I had gone from selling cigarettes in the streets of Abidjan to playing for the biggest club in the world.
“My reality has been turned on its head. Now people see me as a star, a celebrity. I have something like two million followers on Instagram. I am famous back home.”
Now, Bailly earns £80,000 per week for the Red Devils – a stark difference indeed!
