Jose is yet to beat Chelsea in the league as the Tottenham manager. He did suffer 3 defeats, though, and each of them was preceded by Mourinho’s fiery quotes.
Mourinho brands Tottenham as the biggest club in the world
When: Before his first game against Chelsea as the Tottenham manager.
What he said: “For me, it’s a game. I am 100% Tottenham, 100% my club always, all my career. No space at all for my previous clubs. I give everything to my club – my club is Tottenham. For me, it’s so easy for me to play that game. Difficult because of Chelsea’s quality but not difficult from an emotional point of view. Not difficult at all. Easy. My club is always the best club in the world, the best, the biggest in the world. Always my club, always.”
How it ended: Mourinho hoped that Frank Lampard would lose their first encounter in the London derby – but Chelsea won 2-0 away from home.
Mourinho claims he knows Chelsea plan
When: Before the game at Stamford Bridge a year ago.
What he said: “Tomorrow the same [formation]. I was told the same. I was told they were back to a back five which is what they normally do when their results are not the best. They did that when they went to Lille, they did that when they came to us, a system they played for a few of us, and are very comfortable with.”
How it ended: Mourinho was right about the formation – but it did not help him in a 2-1 defeat. As a result, he’s yet to fulfil the ‘biggest achievement’ of his career.
Mourinho claims managing Chelsea is easy
When: Before his first game against Thomas Tuchel in the Chelsea dugout
What he said: “I don’t think it’s very difficult to coach at Chelsea because I was champion three times, Carlo Ancelotti was champion, Antonio Conte was champion. It cannot be very, very difficult because we won titles there. Chelsea always have great players and great squads and good coaches are happy to work with these clubs and with players who give you a very good opportunity to be successful and win titles.”
How it ended: The Blues were a much better team, with a 1-0 scoreline being quite favourable to Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.
