AC Milan director of football Frederic “Ricky” Massara has been impressed by on-loan Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori and is considering triggering the option to sign him permanently, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Having impressed with his display from the bench in Milan’s loss against Inter Milan last week, the 23-year-old tasted his first Serie A victory in his full debut last Saturday.
At the moment, Milan are two points clear at the top of Serie A, and Tomori looks set for a regular spot amid the race for the Scudetto.
Tomori’s future at San Siro remains unclear, however, with transfer expert Romano claiming Milan might not have the budget to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
“We’ll see if they will sign Tomori or send him back to Chelsea and go for a different centre-back,” he told SempreMilan podcast.
“[He’s] an interesting player, he had a good match against Inter. He’s a different centre-back, fast, aggressive but €30million (£26.5m) is too much, it’s not a small fee.
“Milan will take a decision at the end of the season, Ricky Massara is in love with the player. For sure, they will go for him if he will show his skills.”
Like most clubs, Milan are likely struggling financially amid the pandemic situation.
The fact that they added an option to buy in Tomori’s loan deal, however, likely means they were confident they could pay the fee if they decided to.
Thomas Tuchel certainly has plenty of centre-back options at his disposal at the moment with the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, and Andreas Christensen all competing for spots at Chelsea.
But it would have been interesting to see whether Tuchel would sanction Tomori’s loan move to Italy if he had been appointed sooner.
