During Frank Lampard’s Chelsea era, Mason Mount was an ever present. He started nigh on every game unless when given a rest. He was Lampard’s favourite. And this created a division among Chelsea fans.
But since Tuchel took over from Lampard, another maligned midfielder is becoming his favourite. Jorginho.
Not for the first time in his career, Jorginho is having a coach who makes him an important part of the team. Under Sarri, twice( at Napoli and Chelsea), he was the key player charged with circulating passes and dictating play from deep in midfield.
He was the chief orchestra of the popular cliche, ‘Sarri ball’ which was used to refer to the brand of football Mauricio Sarri plays.
Lampard took over and Jorginho found game time difficult, finding comfort on the bench for a lot of games with Lampard preferring the likes of Kante, Kovacic and Mason Mount ahead of Jorginho.
However, the arrival of Tuchel was always going to shake things up and Jorginho has now played every game under the new gaffer. He is playing much better too and is becoming a key part of the Tuchel revolution at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho is one of the best passers in the game, something which has got him so much ridicule on social media with many mocking the number of passes he makes without creating a chance. But what we know is, no Chelsea manager has ever charged him with creating chances, just dictating of play and making sure penalties won are turned to goals.
With Tuchel, he’s playing better than he has ever done and there are not many questioning his position in the team. Should this continue, he’ll likely win over more Chelsea fans.
But for now, we can all say Jorginho is enjoying a new lease of life under Thomas Tuchel.
