OnlyFans, a London-based social media platform popular with amateur pornographic models has announced that they’re getting out of the pornography business, Afriupdate News reports.
Starting in October, the company will prohibit creators from posting material with sexually explicit conduct on its website, which many celebrities use to sell fans explicit content.
The subscription platform has become famous in large part because it allows celebrities to share adult videos with relatively few restrictions.
But such videos will now be banned, in a decision OnlyFans said it had taken to “ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform”,
According to onlyfans new rules, celebrities will still be able to post nude content on the site, but it will need to be consistent with the London-based company’s updated policies.
OnlyFans said it had taken the decision “to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers”. It did not give any information about which companies had made those requests.
The firm said in a statement: “In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.”
The OnlyFans website states that creators receive 80% commission on their earnings, while the remaining 20% covers “referral payments, payment processing, hosting, support, and all other services”.
The BBC reported that the change came after the company was approached over concerns about its handling of accounts posting illegal content.
OnlyFans told the broadcaster it did not tolerate violations of its terms of service, and its systems and age verification go far beyond “all relevant global safety standards and regulations”.
The site, which was founded in 2016 and has seen its popularity increase during the COVID-19 pandemic, says it has 130 million users.
OnlyFans said this week it was launching a new streaming platform and app called OFTV, on which creators can share video content on topics such as fitness, cooking, comedy and music.
