The number of COVID-19 fatalities in Africa surpassed the 210,000 mark on Tuesday even as the continent continues its vaccination efforts to curb further spread of the virus.
According to the latest data published by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a total of 210,435 virus-related deaths have been recorded on the continent so far.
The health body also notes that Africa has registered a total of 8,283,763 COVID-19 cases, from 71,685,086 tests conducted.
South Africa remains to be the hardest-hit country by the pandemic on the continent, with 2,897,521 cases and 87,216 fatalities.
Besides South Africa, no other African country has registered more than one million COVID-19 infections.
Two countries on the continent have reported more than 500,000 cases; Morocco (929,699) and Tunisia (705,474).
Three other countries have reported more than 10,000 COVID-19 fatalities; Tunisia (24,794), Egypt (17,224) and Morocco (14,199).
The continent has seen a recent upsurge in vaccine arrivals, but still lags behind other regions in vaccine uptake.
According to the World Health Organization Director-General, Tedros Adhanom, African countries are the majority of about 50 countries that will miss out on the target of vaccinating 10 percent of their populations by the end of September.
