Despite a surge of players undergoing health and safety protocols as COVID-19 sweeps through the National Basketball Association (NBA) League, the commissioner Adam Silver claimed on ESPN’s show “NBA Today” on Tuesday that the league has “no plans right now” to suspend the regular season.
He added, “we’re having trouble coming up with what the logic would be” to have a mid-season halt.
On Tuesday, Silver said that 65 percent of NBA players eligible for a booster shot have received one, with “a very small number” of those who have had a breakthrough case. The Omicron strain was responsible for almost 90% of the COVID-19 instances sequenced lately by the NBA, according to the commissioner.
“Boosters are highly effective and we are strongly encouraging everyone to get them,” Silver said.
According to The Athletic, the NBA has alerted teams playing on Christmas Day that the league is planning contingencies in case a game needs to be rescheduled.
Just like in many other sporting leagues across the Atlantic, in the English Premiership, multiple NBA games have already been rescheduled, and the National Hockey League (NHL), which is dealing with its own outbreak, has announced that it will be closed from December 22 to December 25.
