Sancho hits the bar
After Boro’s keeper and defender mess up as a result of Luke Shaw’s long pass, the ball falls to Jadon Sancho’s feet – and he tries to lob the keeper with the first touch:
The ball hits the bar, and Bruno Fernandes misses the open goal on the rebound.
Ronaldo’s bicycle kick
Sancho combined with Shaw again, this time waiting for the left-back’s overlap to feed him the ball. Shaw is quickly approached by two opponents but finds a way out and crosses with the outside of his left foot:
The cross finds Ronaldo who attempts a bicycle kick – but Boro keeper Joe Lumley saves easily.
Dalot’s brilliant pass creates chance for Bruno
The right-back was given freedom after he shifted to the half-space. He saw Bruno on the line with the Boro defenders and sent a beautiful ball in his direction:
Unfortunately, Bruno sends the ball well over the bar again as he attempted a first-touch finish:
Bruno leaves two opponents tackling each other
In the build-up, Bruno found himself at left-back somehow. As he first received the ball, he lobbed it over a Boro forward who tried to tackle him:
After an exchange with Shaw, Bruno sprinted away – while his opponent was blocked from tackling him by another Middlesborough player:
Two Varane interceptions in two minutes
In the second half, Boro were a bit more adventurous which resulted in more opportunities for them. They would’ve had even more chances if it wasn’t for Rafael Varane.
Here, he intercepted a dangerous ball from the right:
Just a minute later, he stopped Boro’s attack coming from the other wing:
Fred wastes chance after good team move
That was a nice build-up from United at the end of the first extra-time half, with Anthony Elanga, Juan Mata and Bruno involved:
Bruno made a one-touch pass to Fred who had loads of space in front of him – but he only skewered his long-range shot:
Jones heads it over the bar
The last chance of the game for United fell to Phil Jones who was found by Bruno Fernandes’ cross. Unfortunately, the cross was too strong for his liking as Jones headed it well over the bar.
