Man United had a very frustrating outing in the 0-0 draw against Watford, but the result could’ve been different if the officiating was better.
The Red Devils had two big penalty calls in both halves, but even after VAR checks, neither were given.
Elanga denied potential pen
The first one happened in the 42nd minute as Anthony Elanga was played inside the box by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The youngster was clattered by Craig Cathcart and even replays showed that he got to the ball before the Watford defender and was impeded inside the box.
However, the referee didn’t take further action after the VAR checked called it as a ‘fair tackle’.
In the second half, around the 55th minute, another huge penalty call was made after Cristiano Ronaldo went down in the box.
The Portuguese forward tried to latch onto Paul Pogba’s deflected pass before being brought down by Hassane Kamara.
On this occasion too, Ronaldo had gotten to the ball first before Kamara fouled him inside the box and even the commentators agreed that it should’ve been a penalty.
VAR had an absolute nightmare and denied United the chance to potentially win the game.
On the same day, Man City midfielder Rodri got away with a clear handball in his side’s 1-0 win over Everton – showing just how poor the overall refereeing was on the day.
However, all been said, United had a lot of big chances to win the game even despite the penalty calls being denied and can only blame themselves for the draw.
