Barcelona have been linked with a move for Angel Di Maria by a reliable source.
Let’s look at consider this signing from both sides of the coin.
Pros
His talent and experience
Barcelona would be getting a player who’s considered one of the most talented players in his position.
Despite his age, he still managed 14 goal contributions (5 goals, 9 assists) for PSG last season.
Di Maria can dribble, and shoot; he possesses great passing and crossing technique. He will definitely add some bite to Barca’s attack.
Let’s not forget about the experience he’d add to the team, having played in three of Europe’s top five leagues at the best clubs too.
Free-agent
Barcelona have gotten some sweet deals for free lately. There’s no better example than Barca signing their top scorer as a free agent last summer.
Di Maria’s contract with PSG ends in July, which means Barca will only have to bother about his wages.
Cons
Best years behind
Let’s face it, Di Maria is nowhere near the player he was back in 2014, particularly at the World Cup in Brazil. He’s more like a squeezed out orange right now, plus it’s been 8 years since he left La Liga.
It’s probably why PSG are adamant about not extending his contract.
Not an upgrade on Dembouz
Dembele has his problems, but his goal contributions last season show he’s still a top-quality winger – finishing as La Liga assist leader drives home the point.
On the one hand, Di Maria is ageing quickly. he’s nearly 10 years older than Dembele with little left to give.
Not a long-term solution
Reports claim Barca will offer Di Maria a one-year deal. What that means is that he’s coming as a stop-gap option who will likely leave in 2023.
For a team that’s expected to be clearing out the deadwood, the Argentinean is certainly not the way to go.
