The Dutch emergency services said that a passenger train that derailed in the south of the country left one person dead and several more injured.
Around 3.25 am local time, the incident took place close to the Voorschoten village, which is adjacent to The Hague (2.25am UK time). According to officials, there were about 50 individuals on board.
It was reportedly caused by construction equipment left on the tracks. An investigation is being carried out to find out more information regarding the incident.
According to a fire department spokeswoman, 19 people were brought to the hospital, 30 people were hurt overall, and the other victims were treated on the scene.
According to the ANP news agency, the event caused the front carriage of the train traveling between Leiden and The Hague to leave the rails and end up in a field.
The rear carriage’s fire also started, but it was soon put out.
Reports that the passenger train and a freight train had crashed earlier had caused uncertainty.
Erik Kroeze, a spokesman for Netherlands Railways (NS), acknowledged that a freight train was involved in the incident but was unable to provide any information.
As the rescue effort is ongoing, services between Leiden and The Hague have been canceled.
“This accident is really tragic. I feel sorry for the victims. Unluckily, there is also a death to lament. All the family members and friends of those involved are in my thoughts “Nadine Stemerdink, the mayor of Voorschoten, said in a statement
