SOKAPU accuses FG, el-Rufai of apathy to people’s plight
Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai of not showing concern to their plight over attacks by herdsmen.
This followed the attack by gunmen on mourners and a Catholic priest who were conducting mass burial for 24 victims in Damakasuwa community, Kaduna, on Saturday.
In a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Luka Biniyat, SOKAPU lamented: “We are particularly worried that these massacres and destruction in our communities are becoming too much to bear, considering that Governor el-Rufai has neither said anything about the killings nor shown concern to the plight of our communities whenever they are attacked.
“Of the scores of gruesome attacks, the governor has never made any sympathy visit to the communities, let alone take steps to alleviate their suffering by providing relief materials to the displaced.”
According to him, with the recent attacks and impending attacks, the Fulani militia are still sending strong warnings and threats.
“Many of these threatened communities have consequently relocated to surrounding communities, thereby creating a very serious humanitarian situation.
“We are calling on the Kaduna State Government under el-Rufai and the Federal Government to show more commitment and sincerity in securing our communities in southern Kaduna. We also request that relief materials be taken to our displaced communities across Chikun, Jema’a, Kaura, Kauru, and particularly, Zangon Kataf that is presently in the eye of the storm.”
The Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Aaron Tanko, who conducted the funeral, said, “This is to inform the house and to request prayers as Fulani herdsmen attacked two of Damakasuwa outstations, Chibuak and Kigudu II.”
According to him, the attack, which necessitated the mass burial, occurred a fortnight ago.
“About 24 persons were killed and a few injured with a couple of houses burnt. When the mass burial was on-going, they came back attacking us, even in the presence of security personnel,” he added.
He urged people in the troubled areas to pray against recurrence.
