Manchester United will monitor Brandon Williams’ condition ahead of Thursday’s game against Crystal Palace after the defender left the field with a nasty head injury during the draw against Southampton.
Williams is yet to start since the restart of the Premier League as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named the same starting line up for five consecutive games – the first time United have done so in the league since 1993.
The youngster was introduced as a substitute with 15 minutes remaining after Luke Shaw was unable to continue following an ankle injury suffered in the Southampton penalty box.
Just minutes later, Williams required treatment following an accidental collision with Kyle Walker-Peters. The Southampton defender was able to continue but Williams was brought off as blood was seen pouring from the 19-year-old’s forehead.
United were forced to play the rest of the game with ten men and conceded a late equaliser to damage their hopes of securing a top four finish ahead of Chelsea and Leicester.
Solskjaer says Williams is likely to receive stitches and will be monitored with United back in action against Crystal Palace on Thursday.
“He’s got a cut above his eye,” he told Sky Sports. ” I’ve not been to see him yet but he’s with the medical staff.”
“I think he was getting some stitches with the gash over his eye, so let’s see how he is,” he added to MUTV.
The United boss admitted his disappointment at conceding late on but felt his team didn’t deserve to take home all three points.
Solskjaer said: “That’s how it is, we defended well until that corner so it’s disappointing to have that in the 96th minute.
“But that’s football. I know the feeling the other way as well.
“It is all part of the learning for this team. You think you have three points in the bag but we probably didn’t deserve three points today. Southampton are a good team, they run, and run and chase. We never got into our rhythm today.
“We played some fantastic football at times. The two goals we scored were very, very good.”
