Former Central African Republic president François Bozizé on Saturday announced that he would run in the country’s presidential election scheduled for December.

The 73-year-old returned to his country in December from Uganda where he was living in exile.

“I solemnly accept the task you have assigned me,” France24 quotes him after he was nominated by the Kwa na Kwa party as its candidate for the December poll.

Bozizé took power in 2003 through a coup and stayed at the helm for 10 years, after which he was deposed by Michel Djotodia.

Since then, the C.A.R. has been dogged by conflict that has left tens of thousands dead and millions others displaced.

Bozizé is still under sanctions by the United Nations for his role in his country’s woes, in which he is accused of supporting the Christian anti-Balaka militias.
