For effective checks on the activities of smugglers in Nigeria, traditional rulers at some border towns must synergize with officers of the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) and other sister agencies, Mohammed Uba Garba, the Coordinator, Joint Border Drill Operations, North Central Zone, Ilorin, has said.
Appraising the activities of the special task force, ‘Swift Response’, comprising of personnel of army, police, and immigration, Garba, yesterday in a press briefing in Ilorin, though praised some of the traditional rulers at the border settlements, but said many others still see his officers as carrying out the anti-people assignment.
Bukoro, Alapa, Chikanda, and Babanla are some of the border towns with neighbouring Benin Republic. He said: “No country in the world has been able to stamp out smuggling completely but it can be brought to the lowest level through collaboration with the community dwellers, community leaders, and all stakeholders. Many smugglers are harboured by most of the traditional rulers at border towns.”
