The Delta State Government and police yesterday, denied reports that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) killed a young man in Ughelli.
Addressing journalists in Asaba, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the young man only got injured after jumping down from a police vehicle conveying him to the police station, following his arrest.
In a statement, spokesperson for the police in the state, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said trending social media videos and posts alleging that SARS shot dead a young man and made away with his vehicle was not true, describing the reports as malicious, erroneous, and misleading.
“At about 4:00 pm on October 3, the Safe Delta Squad in Ughelli, while on patrol along Warri-Ughelli road by Wetland Hotel, Ughelli, observed a white Lexus Jeep without registration number that suddenly parked by the roadside. On sighting the patrol team, the driver immediately zoomed off at a high speed in a suspicious manner,” Onovwakpoyeya said.
“Consequently, the team gave him a hot chase and intercepted the vehicle and arrested the two occupants.
“On their way to the station, one of the suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and sustained head injuries. While trying to rescue him, an angry mob attacked the policemen, which made the team to leave the scene with the other suspect in their patrol vehicle to their office to avoid a violent confrontation with the mob.”
She added that other police patrol teams mobilised to the scene but were informed that the victim had been rushed to a private hospital in Ughelli where they saw him alive.
