A pro-democracy group, Concerned Nigerians, has appealed to the United States (U.S.), the British High Commission in Nigeria and the European Union (EU) to impose visa restriction on Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Nwachukwu Enwonwu and members of his family.
This group’s appeal followed the death of EndSARS protester, Jimoh Isiaq, allegedly in the hands of the police in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
In a letter dated October 12, 2020, and signed by its Convener, Deji Adeyanju, the group accused the CP of overseeing extra-judicial killings and human rights violations in Oyo.
It noted that despite the disbandment of SARS by the Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, rights violations had persisted in Oyo State.
“Despite the pronouncement of the ban on the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS) on October 11, 2020, rights violations have continued in the country, especially in Oyo State, as another citizen was killed there. Freedom of assemble, which is one of the pillars of democracy, is now almost a crime in Nigeria.
“If this request is granted, it will serve as a deterrent to others who continue to toe the line of violating citizen’s rights,” the group said.
