Ousmane Dembele’s contract at Barcelona expires in 2022. The next president and his board will soon have to decide what to do with the Frenchman: offer him a new contract or sell him come summer so as not to lose him for free.
We present you two reasons to sell Dembouz and three to keep him.
Sell
1. His physique
Since joining Barca, Dembele has spent more time on the sidelines than he did on the pitch. Last season, for example, the Frenchman managed only nine matches for Blaugrana. Considering his injury record, tying Ousmane down to a new contract is certainly a risk.
2. Salary and behaviour
When the Catalans signed Dembele in 2017, they offered him a salary on the same level as the most important players in the squad. However, the 23-year-old is yet to prove that he deserves it. Barca are in a tough economic situation now and they might look to lower their wage bill. It’s hard to believe that the player would accept a pay cut.
Besides, his behaviour and lifestyle have been a topic of debates for several seasons now, as he’s been late to training on multiple occasions.
Keep
1. Unique profile
Dembele is a dynamic winger that plays equally well with both feet. He’s got lightning speed and combines well. There are only a few players with the same characteristic on the market and, considering our lack of funds, we might not be able to replace him.
2. Player for the future
Ous is still only 23 years old, meaning that he’s got five or six more seasons on the top level ahead of him if he stays fit that is. All of Barca’s leaders except for Marc-Andre ter Stegen are over 30 now and we need to think about the future.
3. Improving our rivals
We’ve let Luis Suarez go and now he’s banging goals for Atletico Madrid, who’ve increased their chances to win La Liga with him in the squad. Dembele could become a deadly weapon under, let’s say, Jurgen Klopp. Seeing the Frenchman shine for another club would be just rubbing salt into the wound of those Barca fans that have been supporting Dembele all this time.
