According to the latest reports, Memphis Depay is going to be Barcelona’s top target in the winter market. We present you two points in favour and two against the possible transfer.
Pros
1. We need goalscorers
Ansu Fati has undergone surgery and it will take him four months to recover. The 18-year-old remains our top goalscorer this season and his absence will be felt. Just like Fati, Memphis Depay has scored five goals this term. As the latest matches have proven, we need players that know how to convert their chances.
2. Versatility
The Dutchman can be used as an attacking midfielder, centre-forward, and left or right winger. If we end up signing an out-and-out striker next summer, there certainly will be ways to use Depay even then.
Cons
1. Not the exact profile we need
What Barcelona really need is a striker, and Memphis isn’t one. In terms of playing style, the 26-year-old resembles Antoine Griezmann and Leo Messi and not Luis Suarez, the one we need to replace.
2. He’ll be free next summer
To be fair, current Barcelona have little chances to win the treble. Signing Depay won’t make us Champions League favourites, he’s not that big of a player. It might be better to treat the current season as a transitional one and not demand trophies right away. Thus, paying money to bring Memphis in January makes little sense when we can get him for free next summer.
