How Manchester United Got Into a Mess And The Possible Way Forward.
It was a rousing night at Old Trafford, the atmosphere was buzzing, Aston Villa were the visitors.
Man United had been unstoppable in the Premier League, summer signing from Arsenal, Robin Van Persie, had been unstoppable as well. United needed Victory this evening to be champions. They also wanted to do it in an emphatic fashion.
In an emphatic fashion they did it.
Van Persie scored a first half hat-trick which put Villa to the sword. 3:0 to United it finished.
20th title they clinched, courtesy of a hat-trick by the man wearing shirt number 20.
Placards of Fergie’s red and white army was everywhere.
Few weeks later, the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson surprisingly announced his retirement. And what would follow?
No one would have expected United to be where they are.
Old Trafford never seen this kind of night till date.
No Man United Player ever since has netted 20+ league goals, Rooney scored 17 in 2013/14 as Van Persie battled with injuries, Ibrahimovic also scored 17 in 2016/17 while Romelu Lukaku scored 16 in Man United’s best league season since 2013 as Jose Mourinho led them to 2nd place.

World class managers hasn’t been fully backed at United in Mourinho and Van Gaal. David Moyes also was never a United manager.
There has been costly flops like Di Maria and Sanchez.
Pogba has never shown consistency and Lukaku never really fit in, especially after Mourinho was sacked.
And the way forward?
Well nothing is guaranteed in football but there are two things united can do.
1. Either assure Solskjaer his job isn’t at stake so he can focus on the job. Also back him in the transfer window. With two more windows like the last one they just had, they’d have a good team.
2. Or, Ole looks clueless and out of depth, lacks tactical discipline. If there’s a better time to let him go, it is now United should stop the experiment, hire a world class manager to lead the rebuild, also buy him 5-6 world class players and United will be back where they rightly belong; At the very top level of football, among the elites.
Whichever way, fans can only hope this decline is arrested soon enough.
