Tukur Mamu, the chief negotiator between the government of Nigeria and the bandits in northern Nigeria, has been detained in Cairo, Egypt.
Mamu has been outspoken about his role in brokering the release of people who were abducted by bandits from a train as it traveled from Abuja to Kaduna in late March 2022.
According to the Daily Trust, Mamu and his family members were detained in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.
Mamu, who was detained at the Cairo International Airport for 24 hours and is now being returned to Nigeria, was apparently on his way to Saudi Arabia for the smaller Hajj.
He revealed that he had left Nigeria on Tuesday and had been investigated by Egyptian security forces, albeit nothing illegal had been found out about him.
Mamu claimed that the Nigerian government intended to hold him in Egypt, following a similar pattern to the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and Yoruba separatist Sunday Igboho, who was detained in the Republic of Benin.
He claimed that the Egyptian government verified the validity of his papers.
Mamu announced last month that he was ending the negotiations with the bandits because he had received death threats and was being blackmailed by the Nigerian government.
His arrest comes a day after Nigeria’s minister of communications and culture, Lai Mohammed, promised its citizens that the worst of the nation’s unrest had passed.
The situation can never be worse, he said, even though there may still be isolated attacks across the country.
On Monday, Bashir Magashi, the minister of defense; Dr. Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, the minister of police; and Rauf Aregbesola, the minister of the interior, all gave press conferences in conjunction with Mohammed.
Aregbesola claimed that the interior ministry had carried out its responsibility to uphold internal security through its four agencies and had aided in economic growth by permitting foreigners’ entry, operations, and establishment as well as foreign companies’ operations in Nigeria.
