American actress Kelly Preston has died of breast cancer, her husband John Travolta revealed. She was aged 57.
Travolta confirmed her death in an Instagram post overnight Sunday, writing:
“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer.
“She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many. My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side. Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered.”
Travolta added that he will take some time off to be there for his children:
“I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while. But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal.”
Actress and former model Preston and Travolta had been married for 29 years and were both practicing Scientologists. They have two children, Ella, 20 and Benjamin, nine. A son, Jett, died in 2009 aged 16.
Preston’s daughter, Ella paid tribute to her in an Instagram post, writing:
“I have never met anyone as courageous, strong, beautiful and loving as you. Anyone who is lucky enough to have known you or to have ever been in your presence will agree that you have a glow and a light that never ceases to shine and that makes anyone around you feel instantly happy,” Ella wrote in part.
“I love you so much mama.”
Born Kelly Kamalelehua Smith (her middle name “Kamalelehua” meaning ‘garden of lehuas’ in Hawaiian) in Honolulu Hawaii; Preston took on her current stage name when she began acting in 1984.
She appeared in more than sixty television and film productions, most notably including Mischief (1985), Twins (1988), and Jerry Maguire (1996). She collaborated with her husband on the science fiction film Battlefield Earth (2000) and the biographical film Gotti (2018). She also starred in the films The Cat in the Hat (2003), What a Girl Wants (2003), Broken Bridges (2006) and Old Dogs (2009).
