The wife of pop singer Justin Bieber, Hailey Baldwin Bieber, has opened up about being hospitalised after suffering a stroke.
Revealing the details in a video posted to her YouTube, Hailey noted that she wanted to tell the story in “her own words.”
Describing feeling a “weird sensation” in her right arm while having breakfast with her husband, she said her fingertips felt “numb and weird.”
While trying to respond to Justin, who asked if she was okay, she found that she “couldn’t speak.”
According to Hailey, she received medical attention from a medic nearby as an ambulance was called. Noting that the facial drooping only lasted about 30 seconds, she soon began to give answers to questions asked, but her anxiety was “making everything worse.”
“By the time I got to the emergency room, I was pretty much back to normal – [I] could talk, [I] wasn’t having any issues with my face or my arm.”
At the hospital, it was revealed that she had suffered a TIA – a Transient Ischemic Attack. The doctors believed this mini-stroke to have been caused by three things; taking birth control, COVID and her frequent trips to Paris and back.
However, at the time of discharge, they had failed to note a blood clot which had travelled to her brain.
During a follow up at UCLA, she was diagnosed with PFO – a small opening in the heart that usually closes after birth.
She had a Grade 5 PFO – the “highest grade” possible and the small hole measured between 12 and 13 millimetres.
Because of the hole in her heart, the blood clot had managed to escape from her heart to her brain, causing the stroke, saving her life.
She had to undergo surgery to close the hole and is now taking aspirin and blood thinners.
At the end of the video, she said, “If there’s anybody that watches this that has gone through the same thing or something similar, I definitely really empathise with you.”
“And I understand how life-altering and scary it is.”
Hailey Baldwin Bieber publicly revealed that she had undergone a minor stroke in an Instagram post on March 12.
