Jada Pinkett Smith revealed in an interview that Tupac Shakur proposed to her while he was in jail, but she turned him down because she thought he would have divorced her soon after he was released.
Pinkett Smith said that she was visiting Shakur in prison when he asked her to marry him. She said, “I wrote about that in the book. When he asked me to get married he was at Rikers. And I knew at that time that he needed someone to do time with him, which I was gonna do anyways. He didn’t have to marry me to do that. “One thing he did not want me as was a wife. I know that for a fact.”
In another interview with Rolling Loud’s Christal Jordan, Jada Pinkett Smith said that she believes she and Tupac Shakur were soulmates in another life. She said that God did not want them to be together in this life, but she reflected fondly on their time together.
“I wish I could get people to understand. And I know it’s so hard [to believe] but it wasn’t just me. It was him, too. It was almost like God made us that way. It’s like, ‘Look, we’ll put y’all together, alright? Y’all gonna be a dynamic duo, but I’ll tell you right now: I’m gonna make it so you’re not gonna be able to get together,’ because that just wasn’t the purpose.”
Shakur and Pinkett Smith met in high school in Baltimore, Maryland. They became close friends, and their friendship eventually blossomed into a romance. However, their relationship was often tumultuous, and they broke up and got back together several times. Despite their on-again, off-again relationship, Pinkett Smith and Shakur remained close until his death. Pinkett Smith has spoken publicly about her grief over Shakur’s death, and she continues to honor his legacy.
