As Todd Phillips‘ Joker prepares for its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festivalthis weekend, a second trailer has finally been released online for the highly-anticipated film.
Fans were given their first real taste of Academy Award-winner Joaquin Phoenix‘s portrayal of the disturbed Batman villain when Warner Bros.released a teaser trailer in early April. The R-rated Joker will be set in the early ’80s and spotlight Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and how be became one of DC Comics‘ most famed villains.
In the new trailer posted above, viewers have a better look at Fleck’s journey and transition into the Joker shared via never-before-seen visuals. In previous interviews, Phoenix stated this film will not be like any other entry in the superhero genre.
“I wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre,” Phoenix told Collider. “I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a … It feels unique, and I think more then anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd [Phillips] seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting. I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real life struggles. And sometimes that is uncovered and exposed, and sometimes it isn’t, and so I always felt, like, there were characters in comics that were really interesting and deserve the opportunity to be kind of studied. And so I think that’s what Todd sees appealing about this idea.”
Leading up to the new trailer’s release, the Joker Instagram page teased its arrival via six short clips. When stopped at the correct moment, those clips read “Trailer 8.28.”
Along with Phoenix the film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maro. Joker lands on the big screen October 4. Peep the trailer below.
Joker will debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 31 at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST (7 p.m. CET). Although of course this won’t be a public viewing, fans will be able to hear and read about the first reactions to the film from the industry’s elite and those in attendance.
