The Matrix saga began in 1999 from Lana and Lilly Wachowski and turned out to be a massive hit, winning four Academy Awards and spawning two sequels.
Now, over 15 years since the last two films were released, plans are moving forward for a fourth movie.
In 2014, it was believed that a new Matrix trilogy was in development at Warner Bros. Then it was thought that The Matrix was being rebooted starring Michael B. Jordan, which would have been a prequel revolving around a young Morpheus.
A few weeks ago it was revealed that The Matrix 4 was officially a go with Lana Wachowski, but not Lilly, returning to direct. The Matrix 4 looks to still be several years away from release but might start filming earlier than expected.
According to Production Weekly, The Matrix 4 will start filming in February 2020 in Chicago Illinois. The film is also going under an interesting production title Project Ice Cream.
So far, there isn’t any more information surrounding the project right now, but more details are sure to come out once the filming date starts inching closer.
Even though the announcement of The Matrix 4 is still fresh, there are already a few things that are known about the sequel.
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are both returning for the fourth film, but the return of Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus is still unconfirmed. Concept artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce are also set to return, but as the film is early in development, their artwork likely won’t be seen for quite some time.
The production title, obviously, doesn’t give any clues to what the film could be about, but the filming start date indicates that the Wachowskis have been working on The Matrix 4 for a while. Even though the filming date looks to be earlier than what many had expected, the film is still likely several years away, since the special effects will no doubt be an extensive part of post-production.
It’s too early to really begin speculating what Lana Wachowski has in store for fans of the franchise, but at least the news that progress is actually being made on The Matrix 4 is a breath of fresh air.
