Inspired by true historical events, the film centres around General Nanisca of the Dahomey Amazons and Nawi, an ambitious recruit. It shows how the Dahomey Amazons battled foes who threatened to ruin everything they had worked for, defiled their honour, and enslaved their people.
The recent trailer release sparked excitement among many people, especially Africans who were glad that our historical stories are being told on a global scale.
The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (of “the Old Guard”) and stars Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, Sheila Atim, Thuso Mbedu, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Jimmy Odukoya, a native of Nigeria.
The film, which is scheduled to premiere in theatres on September 16, is a Sony Pictures production.
