Google search trends has revealed that Nigerians have shown a growing interest in Halloween costumes.
In its October report, Google search trends show that search queries in the week leading to October 31 including “When is Halloween?” “Halloween meaning” and “History of Halloween” topped searches by Nigerians.
Halloween has grown increasingly popular in Nigeria, with Nigerians showing more interest and searching costume ideas within the period in review. Squid Game Costume, Cinderella Costume, and Father Christmas costumes took the top three spots as Nigerians prepared for the season.
The trends data also showed that searches for the term Halloween had been steadily rising over the last 30 days, with Katsina, Bauchi, Benue, Kwara, and Oyo states generating the most queries.
These search trends information is gathered from data collated by Google based on what Nigerians have searched on the platform.
A traditional Western holiday, Halloween is celebrated yearly on October 31 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, United States of America, and other European countries.
The word ‘Halloween’ comes from ‘All Hallows eve,’ which means ‘hallowed evening.’ The tradition has an ancient Celtic origin.
In the 18th century, Pope Gregory III made November 1 ‘All Saints Day’ a time to honour saints. Some of the Celtic tradition was them integrated into All Saints Day as they paid homage to Saints, and the evening before was known as All Hallows Eve.
Google report says Halloween is marked as a holiday globally with growing popularity among young social media enthusiastic adults who are largely interested in costume parties.
During Halloween, people role-play their favourite celebrities, fictional characters and even memes by role-playing them. Homes are decorated as scary haunted houses with spooky themes, including spiders, monsters, and graveyards. Children go from house to house to get candy or sweets in a tradition known as trick or treating.
