Lionel Messi was up to his usual tricks on Wednesday night, as he bamboozled Raheem Sterling with a brilliant nutmeg in the Champions League.
Manchester City fans were treated to a bit of ‘here’s what you could have won,’ on Wednesday as PSG travelled to the Etihad Stadium for their Champions League group game.
Around a year ago it felt almost certain that Messi would end up in Manchester with Pep Guardiola’s team, to reunite with his former Barcelona boss.
Instead the six time Ballon d’Or winner ended up in Paris, so City fans’ viewing was a one off and he made sure he brought out one of his favourite party tricks.
Just six minutes into the game, the 34-year-old made Sterling look very silly with a perfectly executed nutmeg. There’s no reason for the England forward to feel bad though, he’s not the first and won’t be the last.
Despite that one piece of pure genius from the Argentina forward, the first half almost exclusively belonged to the home team, who just couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Guardiola’s side were without Kevin de Bruyne, Phil Foden or Jack Grealish but still dominated the first 45 minutes and hit the post through Ilkay Gundogan.
If it wasn’t for the heroics of Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes at the back then it certainly wouldn’t have remained level.
The game between the two sides earlier in the season, at the Parc des Princes, was similar in the fact that City dominated for long stretches of the game but the Parisians rearguard action kept them out.
On that occasion Idrissa Gueye and Messi were able to score to steal the win for PSG.
