In a devastating turn of events, the submersible bound for the Titanic wreckage, carrying five individuals, met a tragic fate as it suffered a “catastrophic implosion,” according to Rear Adm. John Mauger of the US Coast Guard.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the loss of all lives on board.
Rear Adm. John Mauger disclosed that a remotely operated vehicle discovered the tail cone of the ill-fated submersible, named the Titan, approximately 1,600 feet away from the bow of the shipwreck.
The individuals on board were identified as Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, the tour company organizing the expedition.
The ill-fated journey embarked on Sunday, aiming to explore the remains of the Titanic lying at a depth of approximately 13,000 feet beneath the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean.
