The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa have surpassed 878,000 as the continent continues to see a surge in new daily cases.
Latest figures published by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention show that the continent had reported 871,970 cases and 18,475 deaths by Wednesday afternoon.
South Africa remains the worst affected country on the continent, having reported 459,761 cases and 7,257 deaths.
The figures represent 52.7 percent of Africa’s infections and 39.2 percent of the deaths.
Egypt, the second-worst affected country on the continent, has registered 92,947 infections and 4,691 deaths.
Other than the two countries, only Nigeria and Ghana have recorded more than 30,000 COVID-19 infections in Africa.
In total, only six African countries have reported more than 20,000 infections.
Besides Nigeria and Egypt, only Algeria (1,174) has reported more than 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities.
