Heads of States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State is to hold an Extraordinary Summit on the political situation in the Republic of Niger.
The summit, which holds on July 30 in Abuja, is convened by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also the Chairman, Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
At the summit, ECOWAS leaders would be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger Republic.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the coup d’etat in the Republic of Niger, which ousted the administration of the democratically elected President of the country, Mr. Mohamed Bazoum last Wednesday.
The Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Francisca Omayuli, in a statement said that in line with the pronouncement of the Chair of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Nigeria calls for the immediate and unconditional release of President Mohamed Bazoum, his family members and other civilians being detained; and reversion to status quo ante.
Nigerian government described as unconstitutional, the change of government, adding: “It is unacceptable in a time where concerted efforts are being made to stabilize the sub-region and uphold the principles of democracy and good governance.
“Nigeria welcomes and appreciates the support of the larger international community in urging the military authorities in Niger to respect the will of the people and return the country to constitutional order immediately.”
