The Sudanese police on Thursday announced the death of a protester during the demonstrations in the capital Khartoum and other cities on Wednesday.
“After checking all police stations and their records in the state, it turned out that there was one death case in Bahri,” the police said in a statement.
A total of 89 policemen were injured during the protests, said the police, noting that 30 citizens were wounded due to suffocation with tear gas.
The police further denied using firearms against the protesters, saying “the police used minimum force and tear gas and it has never used firearms.”
The police accused the protesters of using violence against their personnel.
“The police performed its duty to protect the state institutions as usual but was responded by unjustified violence toward its personnel. A police vehicle was burnt with contents being looted, and three other vehicles were completely destroyed.”
Khartoum on Wednesday witnessed mass demonstrations against measures recently adopted by the Sudanese army commander, including dissolving the government and appointing a new sovereign council. The health ministry of the dissolved Sudanese government announced that 14 protesters were killed and dozens were injured.
The protesters, who gathered in the cities of Khartoum, Bahri and Omdurman, raised banners demanding restoration of the civilian government led by the removed prime minister Abdalla Hamdok, and the release of political detainees.
Sudan has been suffering from a political crisis after General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on October 25 and dissolved the sovereign council and the government.
