The United Nations Special Representative for Sudan on Sunday discussed mediation options and possible next steps for Sudan with its ousted prime minister, a day after hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets across the country’s cities to demand a quick return to civilian rule.
Volker Perthes announced on Twitter that he had met with the toppled Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok for the talks.
While confirming that Hamdok was doing well, he said: “We discussed options for mediation and the way forward for Sudan. I will continue these efforts with other Sudanese stakeholders.”
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Sudanese general who seized power in a coup this week, pledged to appoint a “technocrat” prime minister to rule alongside the military within days.
The military takeover came after weeks of mounting tensions between the military and civilian leaders over the country’s transition to democracy.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday called for the immediate release of all those detained by the military and urged all stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint.
