Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on Friday announced his first cabinet appointment, naming Situmbeko Musokotwane as the country’s new finance minister.
Musokotwane, 65, served as finance minister between 2008 and 2011. He also served as central bank governor and special assistant to the president for economic affairs in late President Levy Mwanawasa’s government.
With a doctorate in monetary economics, he also served at the International Monetary Fund, the African Development Bank and the World Bank.
In a swearing-in ceremony at the State House, Hichilema, who won the Aug. 12 polls and took office on Tuesday, urged the new finance minister to ensure that the economy improves.
He said the appointment has come after great consultation and expressed hope that Musokotwane will deliver to the expectations of citizens by ensuring that sound economic measures were in place.
