Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria has asked Kano state government to execute the court judgement that sentenced singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death for blasphemy.
Making this call in a statement on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmad said that the execution of the court’s judgement will serve as a warning to others advising the Kano state government not to be deceived by the outcry from Nigerians calling for the release of the singer,
The statement by Baba-Ahmad read: “The calls by some so-called human rights groups to pardon the culprit should not deter the state government from doing the right thing,”
“This case is purely an Islamic affair, in consonance with the religion, culture and wishes of not only the people of Kano but the majority of the population of Nigeria who are Muslims.
“The council further wishes to emphatically remind all Nigerians especially the secular human rights groups that the judgement is in line with the Supreme Court judgement.”
Afriupdate News had earlier reported how the 22-year-old singer was sentenced to death by hanging on August 10, by an upper Sharia court in the state after he was found guilty of committing blasphemy in a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March.
However, the court’s verdict was met with several outcries from Nigerians who called for the release of the singer.
Also reacting to the development, Abubakar Shekau, leader of the proscribed terrorist group Boko Haram condemned the death sentence verdict.
