Ekiti govt shuts pharmacies, others for violating COVID-19 guidelines
The management and lecturers of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, have engaged each other in war of words over the funding of the state-owned university.
In a statement made available to newsmen, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), EKSU Chapter, lamented the poor attention the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Bamitale Omole and the state government had paid to various crises ravaging the institution.
The statement, signed by the Chairman of ASUU, Mr. Kayode Arogundade and Secretary, Mr. O. D. Ogunwale, said nothing had been done to improve the financial situation of the university, adding that the institution is now back to the era of payment of amputated salaries for an upward of 12 months, and still counting.
“It is important to note that in spite of several meetings that the union had with the Visitor, nothing tangible has been done about the situation on ground, even when he has promised and assured us on several occasions that he would increase the monthly subvention to the university,” the statement said.
But disagreeing with ASUU’s claims, the management of the institution insisted that the current authorities of the institution inherited the present financial problems from the administration of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Oye Bandele, including alleged non-release of six months subvention by the immediate past administration of Mr. Ayodele Fayose.
In a statement made available to reporters, yesterday, the spokesperson of the university, Mr. Bode Olofinmuagun, said it was unfair and amounted to duplicity the accusations levelled against the Prof. Bamitale Omole-led council.
Olofinmuagun stated further that the governing council and by extension, the administration of Dr. Kayode Fayemi have been clearing the mess inherited in the education sector and also desirous of making EKSU a world class university that would be able to compete favourably among the comity of universities in Nigeria.
IN another development, the state government has closed down some pharmacy stores, supermarkets, bar joints, among others, in Ado-Ekiti for violating various COVID-19 guidelines.
They were shut following unscheduled inspection by the state task force on COVID-19 team.
A statement by the Co-ordinator of the Task Force, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, listed the affected institutions as Chino Supermarket, Ikere Road; Babatola Shopping Complex, Ikere Road; NAO Supermarket, Adebayo Road; Beta Life Pharmacy, Adebayo Road; Twin Pharmacy, Fajuyi Area. Others include the Prosperous Club B, Bana Place and Pepper Soup Joint opposite Ologede Police Station, beside Queen’s Court.
