The Governor Benue State, Samuel Ortom has said it is injustice for the Federal Government to clampdown on the paramilitary wing of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) Eastern Security Network (ESN) and leave bandits to freely carry AK47 to threaten the lives of people in the country.
Governor Ortom who stated this in an exclusive interview with BBC on Wednesday said he is aware that the group is illegal and he is not in support of their activities but if the government handles the Fulani Herdsmen the way he handles IPOB and ESN the country would have solved its security challenges long ago.
According to him, there is a lack of justice, equity and fairness in the fight against insecurity in the country. He advised the federal government not to shield any group at this crucial time.
He added that if they can clampdown on the ESN they should also deploy all the military, airforce and other security personnel to bombard the bandits in their hideouts in the forest.
“It is surprising that some foreigners that are calling themselves Fulani Herdsmen came all the way from Senegal, Mali, Cameroon and begin to kill Nigerians anyhow,” Ortom said.
“This kind of thing can not be happening in small countries like Ghana and other African countries and their president will be watching their citizens dies without any positive move.”
Speaking further, he said the type of weapon used by the so-called herders are even bigger and more technology savvy than the one the country security agents are using.
The Governor, however, said the treatment given to the leader of the IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu should also be extended to the bandits and not shield them.
Speaking on bandits amnesty, Ortom said bandits are not trustworthy, even though they said they have surrendered their arms, they will still definitely fall back to their deeds.
He added that those that are calling for their amnesty do not understand how criminals operate.
