Nigerian police said on Wednesday five people were still missing after nine others were rescued following a boat accident in the country’s northeastern state of Taraba.
A wooden boat carrying 14 persons and goods capsized on Tuesday in the middle of a river in Mareniyo, a community in the Ardo-Kola district of Taraba, when it was heading to a village in Karim Lamido district of the same state, said Abdullahi Usman, the Spokesman for the state police.
Usman told Xinhua by telephone on Wednesday that rescue volunteers rescued nine persons on Tuesday as the disaster occurred.
“We are still making efforts to rescue the remaining five persons,” he said.
Usman said the disaster was suspected to be a result of a serious water wave.
