• Say Secession Agitations Borne Out Of Injustice
Former students of unity schools in the country, under the aegis of the Unity Schools’ Old Students’ Association, (USOSA) have thrown their weight behind Sheikh Ahmed Gumi’s call to grant amnesty to bandits.
The group said such move would end students’ abduction and other forms of insecurity across the country. Speaking, yesterday, during the association’s 38th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja, the USOSA National President, Lawrence Wilbert, also said secession agitations across the Southern part of the country was as a result of injustice.
He said: “In leadership, there are difficult decisions you need to take to secure citizens’ lives. Where the option of amnesty comes into play to secure lives, then you should take that option seriously.
“However, when taking an option as a long term, there should be other actions taken to ensure people do not repeat what made you grant amnesty.
“Amnesty for such people should be taken with serious consideration. However, measures should be in place to ensure that it does not happen,” he said.
Wilbert said high rate of poverty in the North and low level of education contributed to the insecurity in the region, adding: “There is a need for government to address the root cause of the problem.”
On Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) activities in the Southeast, he stressed the need for equity and justice to end the agitation.
“What is happening in the Southeast, today, is caused by injustice. Once we have equity and justice across the land, peace will follow. There will be less of such agitations…”
What is happening in the Southeast can happen anywhere in the country, if the people feel otherwise. Is federal character equitable?”
The theme of the event was: “The role of USOSA in uniting Nigeria,” and was attended by experts, who discussed state of the nation and proffered solutions to move the nation forward.
