The Imo State Government has said schools will reopen in the state only when the body conducting COVID-19 test in the 27 councils has completed its assignment.
The Federal Government shut down schools in the country in March because of the outbreak of the pandemic.
Addressing journalists after the weekly State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting presided over by Governor Hope Uzodimma yesterday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the state government has so far received the report of the community testing in six councils.
Emelumba said 24 people tested positive for the virus out of 1,000 people tested in the six councils.
He said the state government would continue to delay school resumption until it is safe to have students back in their classrooms.
The commissioner also said the state government had banned task force, including those selling emblems.
“There is nothing like Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) Task Force, Emblem Collection Task Force, and Revenue Task Forces in the streets of Owerri Municipal anymore,” he said.
Emelumba said that the state government was planning to establish a security outfit to protect residents and their belongings.
He said the meeting also resolved that there would be no longer consultancy involving Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA.
He said Imo would benefit from the State Fiscal Transparency and Accountability Sustenance (SFTAS) guaranteeing the state $20 million due its prudent management of resources.
Emelumba added that the state government had finalised plans to establish model primary schools in the 305 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wards in the state.
