Following the abuses and infractions that the old method of processing the indemnity form has recorded, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB), has introduced a new format for the authentication of the Indemnity Form “in a bid to fortify it as well as make it fool-proof and devoid of any manipulation”.
The Registrar, JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, dropped this hint at a virtual meeting with the Heads of Tertiary Institutions held on Wednesday, 7th April 2021.
The Indemnity Form is an instrument designed by the Board to authenticate the genuineness of information supplied by candidates. It is to be noted that the form is filled by candidates requesting condonement of illegitimate admission, correction of data, inter-university transfer, distance learning, among others. The form must be endorsed by their respective Heads of institutions.
To preclude all abuses and fortify the process further, the Board has devised an additional electronic platform to complement the hard copy form. These two versions, hard and electronic, must be endorsed side by side (simultaneously) by either the Vice-Chancellor, Rector, Provost or an officer not below the rank of a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Rector, Provost or Registrar of tertiary institutions.
The Registrar pointed out that the electronic complement became necessary following abuses recorded in some State Offices and institutions. He announced that the affected staff of the Board and the institutions concerned are currently being investigated by security agencies.
Prof.Oloyede impressed it on the Vice- Chancellors, Provosts and Rectors that they would be held personally accountable for any infractions committed by those they have delegated the task of handling the schedule of this vital assignment.
He said when a critical responsibility like admission, which is the core mandate of tertiary institutions, is abdicated and given to an officer with low integrity, corruption is bound to happen.
The Registrar said, “Admission is the fundamental function of all institutions without which there won’t be any tertiary institutions unless you’re a contractor. I don’t know what would attract anyone to an institution other than admission.”
He disclosed that problems sometimes emanated when Heads of Tertiary Institutions gave their passwords to the system to their subordinates who used the opportunity to perpetrate atrocities in their names sometimes with the active connivance of some Board’s officials.
Prof. Oloyede stressed the need to jealously guard the sanctity of the form which he described as a security document.
He added that allowing the infiltration of a third party through delegated responsibilityotherthanthose officially mandated to handle the task could compromise the entire process.
The Registrar told the Heads of Institutions that the old process of treating the Indemnity Form had been suspended.
He stated that the backlog would be sent to them to sign in line with the new stipulation adding that those that were not accompanied by the online version would be turned down by the Board.
In their response to the new order, the Heads of Tertiary Institutions poured encomiums on the Board for its ingenuity.
They expressed satisfaction with the way and manner in which the Board is providing guidance to the institutions and, in the process, ridding the education sector of abuses and corrupt tendencies, among others.
The Vice-Chancellor, JAPU, Prof. Kola Sonaike, Rector, Bida Polytechnic, Dr Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi, the Vice- Chancellor, Crawford University, Prof. Reuben Kolo, and his counterparts from Kaduna State University, Landmark University, University of Uyo and Covenant University expressed appreciation to the Registrar for the tremendous transformations that the Board had witnessed since his assumption of office while urging him to continue the good work.
They pledge their continued support to the Board in its onerous task of sanitising the system for the good of the nation.
