Director General (DG) of the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has said the Agency will not relent in its mandate to ensure the safety and health of consumers in the country following rising COVID-19 infections and deaths.
Addressing journalists in Benin City, during a sensitisation campaign organised by NAFDAC, Adeyeye said the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the nation’s woes and the challenge of substandard Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
Adeyeye, who was represented by the agency’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Dr. Umar Musa, said the sensitisation campaign was aimed at boosting government’s efforts at informing, sensitising, educating and alerting members of the public to the danger of using unregulated products.
She said the themes of the campaign are multifaceted with clear, concise, informative and educative messages aimed at arousing awareness and consciousness of members of the public about the various infractions that impact negatively on the healthcare delivery system.
Adeyeye pointed out that the campaign themes intend to address public health challenges, which includes the dangers of buying medicines from hawkers, among others.
“Public awareness campaign is one of the veritable regulatory mechanisms NAFDAC has put in place to promote and protect the health of our people. A well-informed, sensitised and educated citizenry is the bedrock of effective regulation.

“This is why this event is another major milestone in our bid to protect Nigerians against unwholesome foods, falsified medical products, harmful cosmetics, poor water and other substandard products.
“The key objective of this sensitization programme is to intensify and expand the scope of our informal and formal behaviour change communication strategies to reach the vulnerable communities, especially at the grassroots level.
“Dissemination of food and drugs safety information is an important aspect of our regulatory work. It is common knowledge that Nigeria has a large share of global falsified medical products and unwholesome food,” she said.
