The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday, kicked against the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Federal Government last week constituted a team to renegotiate the 2009 agreement that it had with ASUU. The team is headed by Prof. Emeritus Nimi Briggs, who is the Pro-Chancellor, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo.
But speaking in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, a chieftain of the South West (Zone D) Chapter of the students’ union, Adegboye Olatunji asked the Federal Government to implement previous agreements that it failed to.
Olatunji, who was represented by the Deputy Coordinator of the zone, John Alao, also called on the government to be sincere for once.
“There is no need for another negotiation. Why do you have to set up another committee when the previous ones have no result? Implement the Memorandum of Action (MoA) that you signed first. The Federal Government must be honest for once. What happened to the previous agreements and negotiations?”
He also said that the students are with the lecturers in their struggle to revamp public education.
He said: “For posterity sake, it is imperative that the South West leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) under the leadership of Comrade Adegboye Emmanuel Olatunji, emphatically dissociates itself from the reckless, inconsiderate and myopic statement from some unscrupulous elements aimed at making villains out of the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for demanding their rights. We will walk with ASUU.”
