Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 31 years old woman, Shade Adelowo for using a razor blade to inflict injuries on an 11-year-old neighbour’s son, Kehinde Ojo, over an alleged theft of N3, 000.
The suspect was said to be looking for the sum of N3, 000 in her purse on Saturday, when she pounced on Kehinde with a razor and made 10 cuts on his body.
According to reports, the victim’s mother, who lives in a Christ Apostolic Church’s shelter located at Idowu-Bankole street of Agbado area, had left her son in the care of the suspect at her Point Of Sale (POS) business when the incident occurred.
An eyewitness, who spoke to The Guardian in confidence, said Kehinde was rejected by four hospitals before he was admitted into a private hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
The witness said nurses stitched 10 parts of his body where Shade had inflicted the injuries. The witness said: “The boy, his siblings and their mother stay in a church environment. On Saturday, the sum of N3, 000 was allegedly stolen from Shade, who attended the church and questioned everyone around, concluding that the little boy must have stolen it, because he had done something similar some time ago.
“Meanwhile, the mother of the boy was not around when this was going on. So, after beating the child, Shade went on to cut this boy with a razor blade. The boy managed to escape from her grip and ran to where his mom was working with blood gushing out from those deep cuts on his body.”
Also, a legal practitioner, Mrs. Tunrayo Falade, who waded into the situation, said, the suspect was released on Sunday on health grounds but was rearrested afterward.
Confirming the arrest, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect, a mother of two was arrested after the victim’s mother lodged a report at Agbado Divisional Headquarters and that the suspect accused her son of stealing N3, 000 from her purse on Saturday.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, he said on interrogation, she claimed the victim stole N3, 000 from her purse, and that she didn’t know what came over her that made her inflict such injuries on the boy.
Oyeyemi said: “The suspect further claimed that she has been taking care of the victim and his twin brother for quite some time, and that what happened on Saturday was devil’s work.
“Further investigation revealed that the victim’s mother had been abandoned by her husband, who left her with three children.
“The woman has been engaging in menial jobs to take care of the three children, and whenever she is going out for work, she will take the children to the suspect who happened to be her neighbour. She stated further that it was a thing of surprise when she saw what the suspect did to her son, because she has been very good to her in the past.
“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered immediate transfer of the suspect to anti human trafficking and child labour unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution,” Oyeyemi said.
