The South African port city of Durban will host the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier which will take place from August 26 to September 4.
COSAFA General Secretary Sue Destombes expressed her confidence that the city will host a “well-organised and exciting tournament” given it had previously successfully staged the men’s COSAFA Cup in 2019.
“We are delighted that Durban has shown its commitment to women’s football with the staging of our crucial TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier,” Destombes said.
“This competition serves not only as an historic first club tournament for COSAFA but is also the qualifier for the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League that will be staged in Cairo later this year”.
The CAF Women’s Champions League competition was introduced by CAF to develop women’s football product in Africa. The inaugural tournament will be held in Egypt later this year and feature top teams from all over the continent.
The 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier will see seven teams from the southern Africa region compete in two groups. The top two sides in each group will qualify for the semi-finals and the overall winner will also book their ticket to Cairo.
South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are the seeded side in Group A, and will face Lesotho Defence Force, Double Action Ladies from Botswana, and Eswatini’s Manzini Wanderers.
Zambian side Green Buffaloes are the seeds in Group B, which features three teams, and have been drawn together with Black Rhinos Queens of Zimbabwe and TURA Magic from Namibia.
