Everything points towards Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona as the club prepares to hit an all-time low, thanks to an incompetent board.
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has been linked with a departure from his club of two decades since he was part of an 8-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich. The rumours have taken full force over the recent days with there apparently even being confirmation from the Catalan side that the player has asked to go.
Messi, who has a year left on his contract is trying to exercise a free clause that’ll let him walk out of the Camp Nou. However, Josep Maria Bartomeu and his directorial committee is adamant and united on the fact that the player’s right has expired in June and he can only leave if his release clause worth 700 million euros is triggered.
Nonetheless, the Argentina international looks more outside of the club than inside, therefore we take a look at the reasons why he must leave.
New challenge
A new challenge is of course the primary reason as to why Messi would want to depart. The 33-year-old has won literally everything in Spain, from collective to individual accolades. With that said, his biggest rival in Cristiano Ronaldo has three different league wins under his belt in addition to an international trophy, which is definitely not part of this argument.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are two of the several clubs vying to sign the Argentine. The middle-east owned footballing duo is dominative in its respective leagues and has all the money to fund Messi’s transfer. He could go there and win in other countries, while the clubs may find a missing piece in their Champions League quest.
Self-respect and dignity
Lionel Messi has given everything he has in store to Barcelona in the last two decades and never created a fuss. However, the current board is being disrespectful to the club’s biggest figure. A lot of horrible signings and other failed transfers have seen the player become a one-man wreaking crew at the Camp Nou.
In what promise to be his final years, Messi must depart the club for self-respect sake after the ill-treatment by Bartomeu and his company. He will be worshipped elsewhere and given a God-like status, which only seems to be conferred upon him for the name sake at Barca in the last two or three years, or specifically after Luis Enrique’s exit as coach.
To prove himself
Lionel Messi arguably has nothing to prove to anybody, but a lot has been made about his lack of success outside of Barcelona. Certain fans argue that while a certain rival has managed to become successful wherever he goes, the 33-year-old Messi has been at Catalonia all his life and even failed to do a good job with an exquisite national side.
Messi may want to give it a shot at proving his individual credentials in another league. Should he sign for a Premier League team like Manchester City, he would have the perfect atmosphere to show what he has in store. With a team similar to Barca in terms of playing style in the world’s most difficult league, it may be interesting to see how it pans out.
