Manchester United are in Thailand for the start of their pre-season tour, and Erik ten Hag held the trip’s first news conference on Monday.
Many Manchester United fans were outraged when it was announced that Harry Maguire would stay as club captain.
Manager Erik ten Hag made the announcement during his pre-match press conference in Bangkok on Monday, ahead of United’s first pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Tuesday. The England center-back, who returned to pre-season training this week, was under increasing pressure to relinquish the captaincy this season after a difficult 2021/22 campaign.
Nonetheless, Ten Hag stated: “Captain is Harry Maguire. I need to get to know all of the players, but he’s a seasoned captain with a track record of success. This does not bother me.”
Maguire, like many of his teammates, had a season to forget last season, with numerous terrible displays. That is why supporters were eager to see a change of guard before the start of the new campaign. Unsurprisingly, news of Maguire’s retention of the armband has not gone down well. MEN Sport has taken a close look at what fans have said on social media:

One of the worst players in our history. This new "era" has started absolutely sensationally bad.

God we are doomed, this is not happening. Give it to anyone except for him. Ridiculous
